![]() ![]() Jack worked various jobs for a year or so then they decided to move to Park City near Mammoth Cave. When our daughter Jeanie was born we decided that Chicago was no place to raise a family.”Īfter two years they had saved some money and moved back to Seco to build a new home. We moved to Chicago where I continued working and both of us went to night school and got our high school diplomas. She dropped out of school too and we went to Clintwood, Va., and got married. After a month I had enough money saved to come home and get Sandy. I got a job at a meat packing plant and worked another job at night. “I quit high school when I was a junior and hitchhiked to Chicago, Ill. Sandy spent her time in the classroom she was an honor student. In high school I played every sport and spent every afternoon in the gymnasium or on the ball field. ![]() We began dating right away and we have been together ever since. I didn’t see her again for two years when we both were enrolled at Fleming- Neon High School. I told her then that I was going to marry her someday and she thought I was crazy. We went on a field trip to the Colson School and met there. I lived in Seco and she lived at Democrat, near Deane. “We met when we were in the seventh grade. Jack recalled the series of events which evolved into a successful marriage and business partnership with his wife Sandy. Jack plans to plant a vineyard of seedless table grapes soon to sell to food stores. Their wines sell well all year around but sales are especially robust when they are sold in gift packages around Christmas time. One of their most popular wines is Miner’s Blood, Sweat and Tears, which is labeled to commemorate the lives of the coal miners. We had over 5,000 gallons of wine on hand before we were allowed to begin marketing it.” Letcher County had been dry since 1948. Meanwhile we got a wet-dry vote in the Seco precinct in 2001 and to the amazement of many people the initiative passed and we were allowed to begin selling our wine at the former Seco Company Store which we acquired and turned into a winery/ bed and breakfast. She yearned to continue the winemaking trade so they began growing their own grapes and making their own wine which is marketed under the Jean Farris Winery label. She was later transferred to Lexington where she and her husband bought a 30-acre farm in Fayette County. My daughter got aggravated and moved to Nashville, Tenn., where she became an investment broker for the ING Company. We got a federal license to make wine in 1998 but we could not sell it in a ‘dry’ county. “She has a college degree in food chemistry and science and she directed us in the winemaking process. ![]() ![]() “The winery was my daughter Jeanie’s idea,” said Jack. The basement of the building stays at approximately 55 degrees which is ideal for the fermenting process. In a typical year they sell approximately 20,000 bottles of wine from their Highland Winery located in the old Seco Company Store built by South East Coal Company. At harvest time in September and October the vineyards yield about 4,000 gallons of juice. This small plot is just a fraction of the 13 acres total where he grows nine varieties of grapes which are used to make about 20 different wines. The plants originated in France and are grafted to a native possum grape root to adapt it to the mountain soil and climate. This small vineyard consists of 100 merlot plants that grow a red grape used to make a dry wine. VINEYARD - Jack Looney cultivates one of his vineyards, planted on previously surface mined land. In the springtime the dirt will be raked away and the plant fertilized again with typical 10-10-10 fertilizer (nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous) to grow healthy vines and a bountiful crop of grapes. A fertilizer stick was stuck in each mound of dirt to help build strong roots through the winter. Jack was there running his tractor with an attached cultivator through one of his vineyards while three of his workers heaped piles of dirt around the base of each grapevine to protect it through the winter. The area had been surface mined prior to 1986. I caught up with Jack on an unseasonably warm (70 degrees) November afternoon on top of a mountain between Barlow Branch in Neon and the head of No. “I’m the doer everything we have accomplished is the result of their ingenuity. “My wife and kids have all of the good ideas,” said Jack. Jack Looney and his wife Sandra of Seco are the epitome of this formula. Alone, they may accomplish little but in concert they are the ‘stuff’ that makes up the American entrepreneurial spirit. In this world there are dreamers and there are doers. The ideal height for a Christmas tree is eight feet. He has approximately onehalf million trees planted on an area that was previously surface mined. How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint at HomeĪnother area to look for ways to reduce your carbon footprint is by changing habits at home. Switching to reusable containers has a much lower impact on the environment. Once used, it becomes waste that consumes even more energy. The carbon footprint includes the material itself and the energy used in manufacturing and transporting it to you. Many items are made of plastic derived from oil. Use reusable cups, plates, utensils, bottles and containersĭisposable utensils used once and tossed after a meal are a tremendous waste of resources and contribute to your carbon footprint. By composting some of your organic waste, you cut down on the volume of refuse headed for the dump and also create useful organic matter for fertilizing your garden. A garbage truck needs to pick it up from your home, haul it to a landfill or processing center, then it undergoes even more energy-using processing. Compostĭealing with waste consumes energy. Reduce your food wasteīuying more food than you need and throwing it away wastes the food item itself, along with all the resources used to get it to you. If you choose, you eliminate that part of the energy use. It takes even more to transport it for processing, storage and then distributing it to markets. It takes energy to plant, cultivate and harvest food. Choose organic and local foods that are in season One of the delicious and healthy ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to switch to high-protein vegetables and certain grains for some of your meals. When you consider using power to produce and ship their food, then ship them to processing and eventually to market, you are talking about a sizable carbon footprint. Raising animals requires more energy than growing plants. Eat less meat and stick with fruits, veggies, grains and beans How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Through Food 10. You will also reduce the wear and tear of travel on you. You can reduce your carbon footprint by avoiding multiple stops and plane changes on your journey. Another option is to find an electric car charging station and power up there. Not all homes are wired for an electric car charging station. Driving an electric vehicle and doing your electric car charging at home can help eliminate the greenhouse gasses that your conventional car produces. It is easy to tell people to drive less, but that might not be possible in your situation. Consider purchasing a hybrid or electric vehicle Running your air conditioning less frequently or raising the temperature so that your system does not work as hard will reduce your carbon footprint. Cut down on air conditioningĬut usage of the most power-intensive appliance in your car. Using cruise control allows your car’s computer to accelerate smoothly and carefully maintain an even speed. We tend to speed up in certain conditions and slow down in others. You may not realize how much your speed varies when you are driving. Sharing a ride to work every day or going shopping can reduce your carbon footprint by about 2,000 pounds of CO2e every year. If the pressure is too low, your car is sluggish and burns more gasoline than necessary. Also, when properly inflated, tires require less energy to achieve and maintain speed while driving. Clean oil and belts and timing gears that are perfectly adjusted will help you get the most out of every gallon of fuel. When your car runs efficiently, it uses less energy. Regularly service your car and keep tires properly inflated ![]() Acceleration burns more fuel, so applying the brakes and speeding up is less fuel efficient than maintaining a smooth, even speed. How much you drive is not the only factor to consider. Organize shopping trips to get more done on each outing, walk or bike when distances are shorter, and use public transportation as much as possible. Cutting down on the miles you drive is one of the best things you can do for reducing carbon emissions. Drive lessĭriving a car is a major source of greenhouse gasses. Since the star will be very far away, we can make the assumption that #tan p# is about equal to #p#. We can use #tan p# to find the distance to that star. In the image above, we can see that by cutting #alpha# in half, we get a right triangle where one leg is the distance between the sun and the other star. This is enough to get a noticeable angle, #alpha#, between the star's two apparent locations. In other words, a parsec is a distance, from which a disk with a diameter of one astronomical unit will have an angular size of one arcsecond. One AU is the average distance from the Sun to the Earth. A parsec is defined as the distance at which an object has a 1-arcsecond stellar parallax. If we made two observations of the same star on opposite sides of the Earth's orbit, we would have a separation of #2# astronomical units, or AU. The nearest star to us, Proxima Centauri, is located 4.2 light years away or 1.3 parsecs. In astronomy, the distances to other stars is too great to measure using two objects on the Earth's surface. A parsec is a unit of distance that is often used by astronomers as an alternative to the light-year, just as kilometers can be used as an alternative to miles. One parsec is equivalent to 3.26 light years. Actually, it's even worse, an object with distance 2 parsec will have a paralax of about (but not precisely) 0,5 arcseconds. 2 parsec is NOT the distance of an object with a paralax of 2 arcseconds, it's twice the distance of an object with a paralax of 1 arcsec. This is true in astronomy as well, but on a much larger scale. ( 16 votes) Upvote Flag Claude 10 years ago True. The closer the object is, the more it appears to move relative to the background. If you look with just one eye, then the other, the object will appear to move against the background.īecause your eyes are separated by several centimeters, each eye has a different perspective of where the object is relative to the background. One way to understand parallax is to look at a nearby object and note its position against a wall. Parallax is a method of using two points of observation to measure the distance to an object by observing how it appears to move against a background. ![]() ![]() ![]() Header validation, can I find a required parameter in the HTTP header?
